11th Annual Family Fire Safety Day – 10/25/2014

PORTAGE, MI – October 25, 2014 – E.S.C.A.P.E. Fire & Safety, WOOD TV 8, WOTV 4, AM 590 WKZO, 106.5 WVFM and WNWN 98.5 FM invited families to learn how to be fire safe today at the 11th Annual Family Fire Safety Day from 10am – 2pm at Lowe’s in Portage.

The day included a variety of activities. For starters, there were free 9-volt and AA battery and smoke alarm give-a-ways (while they lasted).  Plus, children and families had the chance to meet WVFM’s Ken Lanphear and  WOOD TV’s Bill Steffen as well as Jake The Fire Safety Dog from E.S.C.A.P.E.

Jake guided families as they crawled under the smoke inside the E.S.C.A.P.E. fire safety demonstration trailer and went outside to the designated meeting place.

In addition, a Life EMS Ambulance was on location and paramedics distributed safety information and a Portage fire engine was also available for a tour that offered the opportunity to ask the crew about their equipment.

Jake the Fire Safety Dog invited his friend, Dr. Seely Rotigel, to join us this year. She promoted health and safety for Jake and his four legged friends.

Coffee Rescue was on location serving refreshments again this year.

There was even a Halloween costume contest for kids with prizes at 11am.

“2013 ended with the worst civilian fire fatality rate not seen since 1999 throughout Michigan,” said Firefighter Michael McLeieer, President and Founder of E.S.C.A.P.E. “Most of the fatalities, especially those here in West Michigan occurred in homes without working smoke alarms.  It’s through events like the Family Fire Safety Day that we can connect the community and first responders together to educate and empower families to plan, prepare and practice fire safety all throughout the year,” said McLeieer.

October is Fire Safety Month, and Jake the Safety Dog and E.S.C.A.P.E. Fire Safety want to make sure your family is safe with these fire safety tips:

  • Make sure you have a working smoke alarm
  • Test your alarm monthly
    • Change batteries yearly
    • Replace alarm every ten years
  • Have a smoke alarm in each bedroom and on each floor
    • Don’t put an alarm in the kitchen to reduce false alarms
  • Call your local fire department’s non-emergency line with questions or concerns
  • Review home escape plans
    • Have at least two exits that are easily accessible
    • Have a meeting place for the family

 

The lost art of turning logs into lumber Maranda, , , ,

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (WOTV) Students in the Kalamazoo area are getting a first-hand lesson at how trees turn into lumber. The Log to Lumber program was started five years ago to teach kids in wood shop about where lumber comes from. The program also shows them how their classes relate to real-life situations and lets them explore career opportunities they might not otherwise know about.

The program teaches students about forestry, forest management, how to measure a tree, determine its value, and cut it down. It then takes them through the process of hauling a tree to the saw mill and cutting it into boards.

A day of family fun at Walk the Zoo with Maranda Events, Maranda, Safety, , , ,

It was a beautiful day to Walk the Zoo at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids Michigan with Maranda, Priority Health and Jake The Fire Safety Dog. Over 100 children and families had a fantastic day of fun while learning how be active and stay healthy.

Another highlight of the morning was presenting Maranda with a letter of appreciation from the United States Fire Administration.  She was congratulated on the 20th anniversary of providing families with free fun at Park Parties and for launching and promoting the Fire Is Everyone’s Fight (tm) national fire safety campaign over the past two years here in West Michigan.

Campus Fire Safety

Many college-related fires result from a general lack of knowledge about fire safety. Since 2000, 86 fatal fires have occurred on U.S. college campuses, in Greek housing, or in off-campus housing within three miles of the campus.

According to the United States Fire Administration, more than 80% of campus fire fatalities occur in off-campus housing. This has a direct impact on the prevention, planning and response activities for fire and emergency services departments located near colleges and universities.

Important fire facts 

  • On average, ten students die annually in campus related fires, according to the Center for Campus Fire Safety.
  • Four out of five campus-related fire deaths occur in off-campus housing where approximately two-thirds of our students live.
  • Alcohol is a factor in many of these fire related deaths. Alcohol abuse impairs judgment and hampers evacuation efforts.
  • An estimated 3,800 campus fires occur each year in the United States.
  • Cooking causes more than two-thirds of fire injuries at college campuses, followed by careless smoking, arson, unattended candles, and the overloading of extension cords and power strips.

Here are some fire safety tips that could save your life 

  • Select a residence hall or off campus housing that has smoke alarms and fire sprinklers. These mitigation devices reduce the risk of dying in a fire by 82%.
  • Cook only where permitted and never leave cooking unattended.
  • Don’t smoke. But if you must, only smoke outside of the building.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets.
  • Never leave candles unattended, provide a one-foot circle of safety clear of anything that might come in contact with the candle like table clothes, curtains, or papers and put candles out after each use.
  • Always have and practice an escape plan.
  • Look for an alternate exit from every room whether at a party or in class.
  • If you must escape through smoke, Get Low and Go under the smoke toward an exit.

Celebrate safety at National Night Out with E.S.C.A.P.E. Events, National Night Out, Safety, , , , , , ,

Pack up the family and get out of the house on Tuesday, August 5, for the 31st annual National Night Out. The goal of National Night Out is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, encourage police and community cooperation, and demonstrate neighborhood unity in fighting crime and deterioration.

On Tuesday night, August 5, residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outdoors on the porches, lawns, streets, or in parks with their neighbors. Many neighborhoods throughout West Michigan will be hosting a variety of special events.

One big event planned in Kent County Michigan is the South Kent Night Out Against Crime. It will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. at 1515 Eastport Drive SE in Grand Rapids, behind Peppino’s Restaurant. It will be a great time for the whole family with food, a Ronald McDonald magic show, motorcycle stunt team, mascots, the E.S.C.A.P.E. mobile training center, and more. Admission is free!

Jake The Fire Safety Dog, Crusier from Craig’s Cruiser McGruff the Crime Prevention Dog thanks to our friends at EPS Security, and Grandma On The Go, Joy from eightWest and WOOD TV 8 will all be on site to meet guests of the South Kent County National Night Out event.

The E.S.C.A.P.E. Fire Safety Program will recognize its one millionth child to learn about fire safety inside the Mobile Training Center in Battle Creek.

The E.S.C.A.P.E. Fire Safety Program will recognize its one millionth child to learn about fire safety inside the Mobile Training Center Thursday July 31st in Battle Creek.

 

 

The last Maranda Park Party of the summer kicks off on Thursday, July 31, at Northwestern Middle School in Battle Creek! There will be free lunch for anyone 18 and under starting at 11:30 a.m., while supplies last. The party is from noon to 2 p.m. with rides, activities, games, entertainment, and prizes. Everyone is invited and everything is free!

A special surprise at this Park Party includes announcing the One Millionth Child to visit the E.S.C.A.P.E. Mobile Training Center, a 38′ interactive smoke demonstration trailer.  The winning child and his or her family will win a trip to the Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City, a Meijer Gas Card courtesy of Liberty Mutual Insurance, 4 passes to the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, free haircut passes for 4 to Coachlight Barber Shop in Portage, an E.S.C.A.P.E. T-shirt, ball cap, a chance to get a photo taken with Jake The Fire Safety Dog and meet Maranda as well as other surprises!
